Netflix said on Wednesday that it would play the Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel “One Hundred Years Of Solitude” on screen in the Spanish language. According to the streaming service, this is going to happen for the first time.
The novel is known to be one of the most influential pieces written in the 20th century. The multi-generational family tale set an example of the magical realism style which was adopted by other Latin American authors.
The TV series will be produced by the two sons of the author and the filming will be done in Columbia.
The late author did not want to sell the rights to the books “because he believed that it could not be made under the time constraints of a feature film, or that producing it in a language other than Spanish would not do it justice.”
Netflix also announced that it is trying to expand its presence in Mexico by opening an office there. Netflix is planning to expand its viewers’ base by developing some projects in Spanish.
