Naby Keita was taken to hospital in Naples after complaining of “severe back pain.”

The Liverpool midfielder was taken for specialist assessment as a precaution to check the injury he picked up against Napoli, which saw him stretchered off after just 19 minutes.

Keita was taken to the general hospital close to the stadium and was still being assessed at midnight after the 1-0 defeat in Italy.

The team are due to fly back in the morning to Liverpool to begin preparations for their game against Manchester City at the weekend.

Keita was accompanied by the club doctor Andy Massey, and the Reds will take no risks with him given that it is a back problem.

There was no news late into the night on the player. He seemed to be hurt in a challenge with Lorenzo Insigne, but then went down with no other player near him, after catching on the rough playing surface.

The club have said they will know more in the morning, when Keita will fly back to Liverpool with the squad for further treatment.
