HIGH blood pressure symptoms can include chest pain, difficulty breathing and severe headaches. You could lower your hypertension risk by adding more chocolate to your diet. These are the top health benefits of eating the sweet treat.

High blood pressure affects more than 25 per cent of all UK adults, according to the NHS.The condition, otherwise known as hypertension, puts extra strain on blood vessels and the body’s vital organs.

Having high blood pressure is rarely noticeable, but in extreme cases, it can cause symptoms.

An irregular heartbeat, fatigue, and having a pounding in your chest could all be signs of hypertension.

But, you could lower your blood pressure by eating more dark chocolate.

“Chocolate has gotten a lot of media coverage in recent years because it’s believed that it may help protect your cardiovascular system,” said the Cleveland Clinic.“The reasoning being that the cocoa bean is rich in a class of plant nutrients called flavonoids.”

Flavonoids are antioxidants that are found in cocoa and chocolate.

They help to lower blood pressure by improving blood flow to the brain and heart, the clinic said.

But, eating chocolate has other benefits for the heart.

“Good quality chocolate can reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, keep cholesterol from clogging your arteries and thin your blood,” said fitness app FizzUp.“Dark chocolate also contains flavanols, which are chemical substances that protects your skin from sun damage while keeping it hydrated.

“Cocoa contains theobromine, which has positive effects on your mood and helps relieve stress.”

Combined with exercise, eating chocolate is a great mood booster, it said.

But, it’s important to only eat chocolate in moderation.

Dark chocolate is the most beneficial type of chocolate to eat, said the Cleveland Clinic.Chocolate that’s been processed loses some of its flavanols. So, aim for chocolate that’s pure, it added.Extra ingredients added to chocolate could add lots of extra fat and calories.

Moderate portions of chocolate is best for gaining all of the health benefits.

Aim for about 28 grams of chocolate a couple of times every week, the clinic said.
