England lifts its maiden Cricket World Cup in a thrilling finish

Written by admin

The final script that unfolded at the Lords had left both the cricketing pundits and fans rolling their heads in disbelief. People almost ran out of adjectives while describing the outcome – incredible, out of the world, unreal and so on. No wonder, the maiden World Cup victory has united the nation as fans couldn’t hold on to their emotions after the England team won the super over in a dramatic fashion for scoring more boundaries. The New Zealand team and fans, as expected, were dejected at the sudden turn of events.

The spellbinding victory has seen a surge of emotions across the nation with people spilling out of their homes and pubs into the streets to celebrate. Eoin Morgan, the England captain described the result as ‘the most incredible game of cricket’ and paid tribute to the fighting spirit of the Kiwis.

This is the first victory of the England cricket team in a World Cup after the trophy remained elusive for them in 1979, 1987, and 1992. The Queen of England has sent a warm congratulatory message to the team for this thrilling victory. In fact, the English premier, Theresa May broke into a jig with Jeremy Corbyn upon hearing the result.

England had a miraculous escape when it tottered at 86 for 4 while responding to the target of 242. In the penultimate over, Boult had stepped on the boundary rope while grabbing a catch thus giving Stokes a reprieve and adding 6 runs to the English kitty. This changed the equation to England needing 15 runs to win in the final over. The final six runs thanks to the deflection off Stokes bat became a part of the cricketing lore forever. For his superlative stroke play in the finals, especially in the final over, Ben Stokes was adjudged the man of the match and the New Zealand skipper, Kane Williamson the player of the tournament.

The World Cup finals 2019 will be remembered for a long time in galvanizing a nation and keeping everyone on tenterhooks till the final announcement.
