The King of Rock, Elvis Presley lives on through his songs, movies, and memorabilia and has become a timeless icon for his worldwide fans. Soon he will come alive on screen in a biopic made by the celebrated director, Baz Luhrmann. However, it could be heart breaking for the One Direction fans as the person to essay the role of the King would not be Harry Styles but a relatively 27 year old unknown actor Austin Butler.
Austin announced this development on Instagram by posting a picture published in a Deadline article alongside the lyrics of an Elvis song ‘Love me tender.’ The director Baz Luhrmann was effusive in his praise of Austin and stated that based on extensive screen testing and workshops on music and performance, he found the right person in Austin who could embody the spirit of Elvis Presley.
Butler is a relative newcomer and only appeared in a Broadway revival of the Iceman Cometh by Denzel Washington. In addition, he is also slated to play a part in the upcoming ‘Once upon a time in Hollywood’ by Quentin Tarantino starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie.
The biopic is set to go into production early next year with Tom Hanks being confirmed as playing the role of Presley’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker.
It goes without saying that cinema goers around the world would be extremely thrilled to see Elvis Presley, one of the most iconic musical personalities in the world, on movie screens.
